[Hanmaeum Jeonbok Dolsotbap] A Must-Try Abalone Stone Pot Rice Spot in Sanha-dong, Buk-gu, Ulsan
This is 'Hanmaeum Jeonbok Dolsotbap,' a popular abalone stone pot rice restaurant in Sanha-dong, Buk-gu, Ulsan. Rich and creamy, wonderfully nutty, with a subtle umami that builds gently at the finish — a truly special place. It might not be for those who prefer bold, stimulating flavors, but for me it was absolutely perfect.
Here's the menu. I ordered the jeonbok-bap (abalone rice). Looking back at the photos, the shrimp jeon is also catching my eye now — very curious! 😄
Here are the basic side dishes. Every single one was seasoned just right — nothing too salty. The green namul (wild greens) in particular — I'm not sure what it was exactly — but paired with plain white rice, it had this wonderfully sticky, addictive umami quality that I loved. The kkakdugi and other side dishes were all delicious too. The golden brass bowls also gave everything a beautifully neat, appetizing appearance. 😄 One tip for later: wrap the abalone rice in the seaweed provided and it's absolutely outstanding.
Before the abalone rice arrives, a deeply rich miyeok guk (seaweed soup) comes out to greet you first. The depth of flavor was remarkable — it tasted like the seaweed had been simmered for a good five hours. The kind of seaweed soup that would be absolutely incredible with ramen noodles added in. 😄
And now — the jeonbok-bap! The abalone was thinly sliced and packed in generously, and the rice had that distinctive greenish hue from the abalone liver mixed through. Scoop the rice out into a separate bowl first, then pour hot water into the stone pot to make nurungji-sungnyung (scorched rice tea) to enjoy at the end.
One spoonful of the abalone rice, and as I mentioned at the start — the subtle, quiet nuttiness is just outstanding. The rich, creamy flavor of the abalone liver is gently infused throughout every grain of rice, and the nuttiness that builds with each chew is deeply satisfying. The finely sliced abalone pieces were delicious too. Without any additional seasoning, the rice itself already carries this gentle, lingering umami — exactly my kind of flavor. And wrapping it in the nutty seaweed amplifies that nuttiness even further! 😄
Even the sungnyung at the end wasn't just plain scorched rice water — it carried that same gentle nuttiness from the abalone rice all the way through to the final sip.
That was 'Hanmaeum Jeonbok Dolsotbap,' a wonderful abalone rice spot in Sanha-dong, Buk-gu, Ulsan.
The flavor profile is the kind that older generations tend to absolutely love. 😄 And if you prefer something with more of a punch, the mul-hoe (cold raw fish soup) might be the better pick for you!
