[Geumsujeo] A Korean Table Spot in Seonhwa-dong, Jung-gu, Daejeon
This is 'Geumsujeo,' a hanjeongsik (Korean full-course) restaurant in Seonhwa-dong, Jung-gu, Daejeon. The food was genuinely good — my one wish was that the rice had come out a little earlier. But the clean presentation and impressive number of dishes made it a worthwhile visit. I believe I had the Silver Set, which came out to around 20,000 won per person — and for that price and that many dishes, I'd say it's fair value.
We started with a refreshing salad. 😄 Then came the jeonbyeong (savory crepes) — and the filling inside was surprisingly unique. Something like a lightly tangy stir-fried chicken tenderloin — that chewiness paired with the nutty, slightly toasted crepe wrapper was a wonderful combination. Every dish, looked at individually, had its own charm. 😄
Next, the kodari (semi-dried pollock). The gochujang-based sauce had a really lovely umami depth. But here's where the recurring theme of this meal began — every dish was clearly meant to be eaten with rice, and the rice was taking its sweet time arriving. 😢
The japchae was the undisputed best dish of the day. The lightest, cleanest japchae I've ever had — not greasy in the slightest, never cloying, yet with a lingering umami that just kept dancing on the palate. I'd genuinely love to have that japchae again. 😄 The jeonbyeong also deserves another mention — worth repeating! 😄
The tteokgalbi was also lovely — just the right amount of fat for a beautifully soft texture. But again... where was the rice?! 😂
Then came the freshwater shrimp stew — incredibly clean and refreshing. And again — the seasoning was clearly calling out for rice. 😂 I'll keep saying the same thing because it kept being true. 😂
The smoked duck was decent but middling — felt a little like store-bought smoked duck placed over bean sprouts and lightly heated. And just as we'd made our way through all of that...
The rice finally arrived!! 😄 The portion was on the smaller side given how many dishes had come before — but they said refills were available on request.
Now, the second-best dish of the day. I believe it was chwinamul bokkeum (stir-fried aster greens). The way this clung to the tongue was no joke — I could genuinely eat three bowls of rice with just this. There were little moments of extraordinary flavor scattered throughout the meal like this — yet somehow the overall picture felt like something was just slightly missing. 😂 Interestingly, the main dish — the stir-fried squid — was actually one of the more underwhelming items.
And finally, what genuinely moved me at the end — the sungnyung (scorched rice tea). Nurungji sungnyung, but — wait for it — mixed with kong-guksu broth (soy milk). And this combination is a revelation of nuttiness. How had I never thought to try this before?! The most satisfying possible ending to the meal.

Somehow felt like 2% was missing overall, yet every individual dish had something to offer — a strange and fascinating experience. 😂 Bottom line — was I satisfied? Yes. 😄
