[Basirak] A Unique Tonkatsu Experience in Daeheung-dong, Jung-gu, Daejeon

This is 'Basirak,' a distinctive tonkatsu restaurant in Daeheung-dong, Jung-gu, Daejeon. Thin soup-like curry, potato salad, and torikatsu (chicken katsu) — a place where you get to enjoy special menu items that are hard to find anywhere else!

Here's the menu. The two main options are torikatsu and roskatsu (pork loin katsu), with the roskatsu available in a larger portion too. It had been so long since I'd had chicken tonkatsu that I went straight for the torikatsu! The menu illustrations and lettering gave off a very authentic Japanese vibe. 😄

One unexpected highlight — the water glass. A soft sky blue color, so delicately understated that I found myself genuinely coveting it. It made me think "so this must be how our ancestors felt gazing at Goryeo celadon..." 😄 When water was poured in, it looked almost ethereally beautiful.

Here's the full spread that comes with the torikatsu — potato salad, soup curry, chawanmushi (Japanese savory egg custard), mentaiko (spicy cod roe), seed jeotgal, and fruit. The variety of accompaniments to enjoy alongside the katsu is a real hallmark of Basirak. The torikatsu, cabbage salad, and rice round out the meal.

The torikatsu portion felt a little small at first glance — but once I worked through all the accompaniments, it turned out to be just right. 😄

Starting with the chawanmushi — the warm temperature was lovely, and those small black dots had an almost caviar-like depth of umami. Soft, nutty, and a wonderful way to begin the meal. The potato salad had a subtle tanginess and just the right amount of mayo — letting the potato's own natural flavor shine through rather than drowning it. 😄

The cabbage seasoning was something special — a slightly tangy sauce reminiscent of what you occasionally encounter in Japan, but not something I've come across in Korea before. Since the torikatsu leaned a little on the rich side, this cabbage did a wonderful job of cutting through the richness between bites.

The torikatsu itself was unbelievably tender. It seemed to use thigh meat — beneath the crispy breadcrumb crust, the chicken was extraordinarily soft. Almost melting as you chew, if that makes sense. On the richer side though — and that's where the accompaniments really earn their place. The cheongyang chili dadaegi, seed jeotgal, and mentaiko each cut through the richness beautifully when paired with a bite of katsu. 😄

The soup curry had a subtle spice and a slight tanginess to it — interesting and enjoyable. There's no separate tonkatsu sauce provided, so the curry essentially takes that role.

My friend ordered the roskatsu, and I had a taste — just as tender as the torikatsu. Overall the meal leaned a touch on the rich side, but with all the thoughtful accompaniments, everything balanced out well in the end. 😄

Basirak — a tonkatsu experience unlike anything else in Daeheung-dong.
