[Bukhang Hoejip] A Must-Try Braised Fish Spot at Mokpo North Port
This is ‘Bukhang Hoejip,’ a fantastic braised fish restaurant at Mokpo North Port. The braising sauce here is absolutely masterful, and the quality of the hairtail (galchi) is outstanding — the flesh flavor is just extraordinary. A taste that far exceeds what you’d typically expect from a tourist-area restaurant!
Here’s the menu. I ordered the hairtail + pomfret jorim (braised fish) combo, and added yukhoе nakji tangтangi (raw beef and live octopus) later. The first floor seemed to be the stew/braised dishes side and the second floor the sashimi restaurant — though I’m not entirely sure! 😄
The basic side dishes were immediately impressive — nothing overseasoned, every single one calibrated just right. The stir-fried fish cake and stir-fried miyeok (seaweed) in particular were exactly the kind of thing that pairs perfectly with plain white rice. 😄
Now, the jorim arrived in a wide pot, the fish and ingredients nestled in a shallow pool of braising liquid. Beyond the usual daikon radish, there was potato and butternut squash too — the refreshing quality of the radish, the nutty thickness of the potato, and the gentle sweetness of the squash all melting into the broth and making it even more delicious. 😄
A whole pomfret was in there. The flesh practically fell apart as I picked it — clearly fresh fish, zero gamey smell, with a wonderfully rich fat content. Delicious. But honestly, the hairtail was so good it slightly overshadowed the pomfret.
Jeolla-do black hairtail (meokgalchi). The real deal. The flesh quality is easily 2 to 3 times better than regular hairtail anywhere else. That distinctively pure hairtail flavor coming through so cleanly and beautifully — just exceptional. The braising sauce isn’t overpowering, which lets the natural hairtail flavor shine, while a subtle, well-calibrated spicy kick from the broth seeps in just right. This could genuinely serve as the textbook definition of perfectly braised fish. The seasoning is light enough that even eating the ingredients on their own without rice, nothing tastes too salty. The potato in particular — fluffy and wonderfully nutty — was a personal favorite. The longer it simmers, the more everything melds together beautifully. 😄
And in Mokpo, you simply cannot skip the tangтangi! 😄 The nakji (octopus) was beautifully fresh, and the yukhoе (raw beef) was also impressively fresh. A touch of sesame oil, placed over steamed rice — absolute perfection. 😄
Looks like a typical tourist-trap restaurant from the outside — but the food completely exceeded my expectations. Left thoroughly satisfied! 😄
