[Eorak] A Must-Try Bori Gulbi Jeongsik Spot in Sangdong, Mokpo
This is ‘Eorak,’ a popular bori gulbi (barley-dried yellow corvina) set meal restaurant in Sangdong, Mokpo. I personally enjoyed the meal, though browsing Kakao Map reviews afterward revealed quite a stir! 😂 One critique I did agree with — the spread felt a little sparse for the price. But the taste itself? I was satisfied.
Three of us ordered the hoe (sashimi) + gulbi jeongsik combo — I believe it was the special tier — plus one yeonpotang (octopus soup). Here’s the menu for reference!
Here are the basic side dishes. I personally enjoyed the acorn jelly (dotori-muk) and found everything decent — but looking back at the photos, the side dish spread does feel a little light for 30,000 won. 😄
The sashimi — I believe it was mackerel pike (samchi) that day. Thick slices, seemingly lightly aged, and I enjoyed it. It was also delicious later when lightly poached in the yeonpotang, almost shabu-shabu style. 😄
In Jeolla-do, hongeo samhap (fermented skate with pork and kimchi) is non-negotiable. 😄 Nicely fermented skate, and scallops and abalone were also provided. Not plain steamed — they had a light seasoning that added just enough umami lift without overpowering. That subtle touch was perfectly calibrated. 😄
A family member who’d been before specifically brought us here for the kim-guk (dried seaweed soup) — and it was a real highlight. A different charm from miyeok-guk — slightly nuttier, with a soft, smooth finish. 😄
Now, the main event — the bori gulbi. The size was genuinely impressive — I was taken aback by how substantial it was. That dried, concentrated flavor was wonderful, and the seasoning was perfectly calibrated for eating with rice. 😄 The combination of rich, oily gulbi dipped lightly in tea — some kind of tea I can’t remember the name of, sadly 😢 — with that subtle bitter edge cutting through the richness, alongside nutty rice... the harmony was outstanding.
The yeonpotang arrived last. The broth had a slightly rich, meaty quality with a refreshing undertone — but the black pepper flavor was very prominent. If I go back, I probably won’t order this one again. 😄 I’d imagined a yeonpotang with a gentle, subtle nakji (octopus) aroma — this was a completely different experience from what I expected. 😂
The food itself was good, but the price does feel on the higher side. That said, everyone in the family left satisfied. 😄
