[Miseoninе] A Must-Try Gamja Ongsimi Spot in Jeongdongjin, Gangneung

This is 'Miseoninе,' a beloved gamja ongsimi (potato dumpling soup) restaurant in Jeongdongjin, Gangneung — a place where you can experience the true essence of nutty, earthy Gangwon-do potato flavor. Mild and understated, yet with a quiet, lingering umami that keeps drawing you back. 😄

Here's the menu. I ordered the fresh gamja ongsimi, gamja jeon (potato pancake), and susubukkumi (sorghum pancake with red bean filling). The restaurant atmosphere felt like visiting a grandmother's house from childhood — the owner converted their old family home into a restaurant, and that warmth and character absolutely adds to the experience.

Here are the basic side dishes alongside the susubukkumi. The cucumber muchim (or cucumber kimchi?) had a pleasant tanginess that whets the appetite, and the kkakdugi and kimchi were slightly aged — which turned out to pair perfectly with the gamja ongsimi later on. The susubukkumi has red bean paste inside. The owner mentioned as she served us, "Our food here is on the mild side, so if you'd like more flavor, feel free to add the sugar or soy sauce on the table" — and that description was spot on. The sorghum wrapper has this wonderfully chewy, slightly crumbly texture, and the red bean filling inside was nutty rather than intensely sweet — soothing and gentle on the stomach. I was enjoying the mild flavor as-is, but following the owner's suggestion and adding a sprinkle of sugar? A whole new experience. Looks like our palates conditioned to bolder flavors can't escape it after all. 😂

Next, the gamja jeon. Again, that same gentle, non-aggressive flavor that I loved. All the potato dishes I tried in Gangneung shared this quality — a mild, subtly nutty taste that's hard to put into words. And the texture — neither too chewy nor too crumbly, sitting right in that perfect middle ground. That seems to be the signature of Gangwon-do potato dishes. Dip it lightly in the seasoned soy sauce and it's pure bliss. 😄

Now, the highlight of the meal — the gamja ongsimi! It arrived in an earthenware jar, which was a lovely touch. Inside were the potato dumplings and buckwheat noodles. The broth had an incredibly thick, almost starchy consistency — almost like the sauce in tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork), if I'm being slightly dramatic. 😂 But it's genuinely captivating. The same mild, quietly umami-rich quality runs through everything here — I suspect the clams are behind that depth. And there's a surprisingly clean, refreshing quality to the broth too — looking at it you'd never expect it, but it's strangely refreshing and impossible to stop eating. 😄 For those who find it a little plain, a splash of soy sauce and a sprinkle of perilla seeds completes the flavor perfectly.

The gamja ongsimi themselves have that wonderfully unique texture — nutty potato flavor with every chew, somewhat like sujebi but distinctly their own thing. The buckwheat noodles were nutty and satisfying too. Add a spoonful of kimchi on top and the dish reaches its full potential. The octopus jeotgal (salted fermented octopus) also paired beautifully. What looks simple on the surface has this irresistible magnetic quality that keeps the spoon coming back. 😄

I came to Gangneung specifically wanting to try gamja ongsimi at least once — and this was an absolute success!

We stopped here for lunch on the way home after visiting Haslla Art World in Jeongdongjin. 😄

Miseoninе in Jeongdongjin — gamja ongsimi highly, highly recommended!
