[Hwangganе] A Comforting Oyster Rice Spot in Daeheung-dong, Jung-gu, Daejeon
This is ‘Hwangganе,’ a beloved oyster rice restaurant in Daeheung-dong, Jung-gu, Daejeon. Mild and unfussy, gently seasoned with soy sauce — a place where the gentle, soothing nuttiness is the whole point. Easy on the stomach and quietly outstanding!
Here’s the menu. I usually go with the oyster rice, but this time I tried the oyster and nakji (octopus) rice for a change.
The side dishes at Hwangganе are an attraction in themselves. The seasoned or pickled seaweed in particular — wrapping a spoonful of the mild oyster rice in one sheet and eating it together adds a lovely salty kick that works beautifully. The cucumber peppers marinated in ssamjang are also wonderful — still crunchy with a great ssamjang flavor. The soy sauce comes separately to mix in according to your own preference. 😄
Before the oyster rice arrives, a deeply rich miyeok-guk (seaweed soup) is served first. Just seaweed and perilla oil, seemingly — but it has the depth of something that’s been slowly simmered in an iron cauldron. Wonderfully nutty and rich. Warming yourself up from the inside with this while waiting for the rice is a perfect ritual. 😄
Now, the oyster and nakji rice — generous amounts of plump oysters and octopus packed in. Served in a stone pot so it stays piping hot throughout, with a lovely light crust forming at the bottom. Dried seaweed flakes, daikon radish, carrot, and chives round it out. The radish and carrot provide just enough natural sweetness to fill any gap you might feel. 😄
As mentioned, the only seasoning is soy sauce — mix in as much as you like. Gochujang is available on request, but at Hwangganе, the clean soy sauce version is the way to go. The gentle sweetness from the radish and carrot, the nuttiness from the oil and seaweed flakes, and the savory umami of the soy sauce — this combination is just outstanding. You might think “is this a little plain?” for a fleeting moment — and then realize you’ve been quietly, steadily spooning it up without stopping. 😄
Hwangganе — very highly recommended!
