[Manna Charcoal Grill] A Must-Try Jjol Moksal Spot in Jungri-dong, Daedeok-gu, Daejeon
This is ‘Manna Charcoal Grill,’ a charcoal grill restaurant in Jungri-dong, Daedeok-gu, Daejeon. The jjol moksal (thinly sliced, chewy pork neck) here is the real deal. It’s thin pork neck with a crisp, crunchy fat edge, and when the juices start rising to the surface, put it on a spoonful of steamed rice and eat them together... that’s it, game over. Highly recommended!!
Here’s the menu. The odol galbi (pork rib with cartilage) and yeongol yeonsal (boneless rib) were described as the bone-in and boneless galbi, respectively. We went with the jjol moksal. 😄 Later I also tried the green tea makchang (pork intestine).
Here are the basic side dishes. The jjol moksal tasted best with a light dip in the pink salt. 😄 The owner also suggested grilling the seasoned radish salad (musaengchae) and eating it together, calling it a special treat, and that combination was also absolutely, absolutely appealing. The bean sprout soup was nicely spicy and refreshing too.
Now, the jjol moksal. It arrived in a container, stacked layer by layer in thin slices. It came out cold, and that seemed to be a trick to boost the meat’s flavor. One container was one serving. 😄 We also ordered steamed egg, which was fluffy and lovely.
The thickness is somewhere between daepae samgyeopsal (thin-shaved pork belly) and regular samgyeopsal. That means it cooks quickly, which is another plus. The owner’s advice: don’t cook it until completely crispy!
Wow, this jjol moksal is something special. The pork neck is wonderfully chewy, and the fat edge has a crisp, crunchy bite, so even though the slices are thin, they have a definite presence. When the neck’s juices start to glisten on the surface, pick it up, wrap it around steamed rice, and... ahh. 😄
There’s no gamey pork smell whatsoever, and I wondered if the aging is what gives it this flavor. I’d love to know their secret. It paired really well with the grilled radish salad too, which has a slight tanginess that matches nicely.
I also ordered the kimchi malgguksu (cold kimchi noodles), and it wasn’t too sour, which was exactly to my taste. The noodles were chewy too. It’s a great dish for washing away the meat’s grease between rounds of jjol moksal!
I tried the green tea makchang as well, but I’d recommend skipping it and focusing on the jjol moksal. 😄 I also saw the galbi at the next table, and it looked amazing too. It seemed to come out already grilled.
That was ‘Manna Charcoal Grill’ in Jungri-dong, Daedeok-gu, Daejeon.
A place where you can try the very special jjol moksal!!
