[Chakhan Nakji] A Stir-Fried Octopus Institution in Hongdo-dong, Dong-gu, Daejeon
This is 'Chakhan Nakji,' a beloved stir-fried octopus restaurant in Hongdo-dong, Dong-gu, Daejeon. I've visited several Chakhan Nakji branches around Daejeon, but this one is by far the largest — and absolutely packed with people. From what I've heard, the Hongdo branch is actually the original location.
The combination of sweet and spicy stir-fried octopus with steamed rice is just unbeatable here. 😄
Here's the menu. There's the classic nakji bokkeum, galnak-tang (short rib and octopus stew), and — new to me — a nakji bokkeum wrapped in yukjeon (pan-fried beef)! With four people, we ordered 3 servings of the yukjeon wrap nakji, plus the seafood pajeon (green onion pancake) — because at Chakhan Nakji, the pajeon is non-negotiable. 😄
At the self-serve bar, the Hongdo branch doesn't offer makgeolli unfortunately. 😄 But there's cold soup, salad, soft tofu, kkakdugi, and bean sprouts. The tangy cold soup was perfect for whetting the appetite, the soft tofu was great for soothing the palate between spicy bites, and the salad dressing had a subtle fruity note with a lovely richness to it.
The nakji bokkeum arrived — fiery red and absolutely irresistible looking. 😄 The octopus pieces are generously large, so you snip them up with scissors. The moment the bowl hits the table, a wave of smoky char aroma hits you immediately.
Then came the yukjeon. Beef yukjeon, and the size was absolutely commanding. More than enough to justify every won spent. 😄
Now, the pajeon. The crispy seafood pajeon is another signature of Chakhan Nakji. The first time I ever had it, the sheer thickness of it — almost like eating bread — genuinely surprised me. 😄 On this visit the Hongdo branch's version was a touch oilier than usual, making it slightly less crispy, but the nuttiness was still there, and the generously large chunks of octopus inside were a definite highlight. Even if you're full, make sure to try the pajeon when you visit Chakhan Nakji. 😄
Now — wrapping nakji bokkeum in the yukjeon. Who on earth came up with this combination? The spicy octopus paired with the soft, nutty, savory beef was absolutely phenomenal. The beef was tender and not at all chewy, with a wonderful eggy richness and deep beef flavor. Add the umami of the nakji bokkeum on top of all that... and you just can't stop wrapping and eating. 😄
But ultimately, spicy nakji bokkeum belongs with a bowl of rice. Chakhan Nakji's version has this addictive sweet undertone that keeps pulling you back for more rice. Mix in some bean sprouts for a satisfying crunch, or wrap it all in seaweed — both are incredible. Wrapping in yukjeon, wrapping in seaweed, eating with rice — before you know it, your bowl is completely empty. 😄
That was 'Chakhan Nakji' in Hongdo-dong, Dong-gu, Daejeon.
The nakji wrapped in yukjeon might be a newer menu item — or it might have been around for a while and I just hadn't tried it until now 😄 — but either way, it's an absolute must-order. Highly recommended!
